Community Cultural Projects
2003 The River, Life force of Fitzroy
A giant ground painting (380 sq metres) at Guwardi Ngadu Frail Aged Hostel,
Fitzroy Crossing . Due to the multiple modes of’ being of a place’, a strong sense
of connectedness to the land can continue through the creative collaboration
across all generations and the four different language groups within theFitzroy Crossing community.
2003 Tree Hugs,
An art project with the Wilderness Society involving community members, local
Tasmanian, national and international. People young and old, male and female,
knitted red sections which were pieced together to form metre long hugs.
These ‘hugs’ were then wrapped around a part of old growth forest in the Styx
Valley, Tasmania, to form a straight red line through the forest, A line of
protection, of care, of no to further logging. Knitting has been part of our
cultural heritage for generations and is an intimate and caring form of making. The
Knitted red hugs also played against the coloured tape used to earmark the trees
for harvesting.
This panorama of hugs was then filmed over a 19 hour period and then
condensed to form a video of 15 minutes, showing the beautiful hugs made from
the community in the forest through the shifting light of night to day.
2003 Liminal – Thresholds of Being
An eight week residency on the Oncology Ward, creating a body of large pastel
and pigment pictures in response to the patients, their families, friends and staff
at the Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania.
2003 Kosagi – Little Egret, Bridge to Japan
International art collaboration between elderly residents from aged care facilities
in Akashi, Japan and Strathcare, Hobart. This project featured paper based
artworks around the theme of the little egret which migrates between the two
sites. Works included life size papier mache sculptures, origami, composite
photography, aural histories, sound scapes, recordings of community radio
programes and the setting up of a recording station by the Hobart residents
themselves and local school children.
2002 ‘Creative Guru’ – position of creative arts project officer with all three facilities of
Strathcare Aged Care Facilities around Tasmania reconfiguring the face of the
elderly within the broader community using the arts as the main vehicle of
expression.
2002 Older Persons and Disabled Sector Officer
Position held with Cadence 99.3 FM community radio
2002 Mountain Magic
