Exhibition Introduction:

¡°Insiders Looking In¡± is a mutual exhibition that explores ¡°adaptation¡±.

Jean Klimack and Doug Lewis¡¯ artistic styles have had little to do with each
other in the past. Living together in Beijing, they now have in common the process of
¡°adaptation¡± in a new aesthetic climate. Their artistic practice is being
re-shaped by life in Beijing. The concept for this exhibition is influenced by
Louis Bourgeois¡¯ work entitled ¡°Privacy vs. The Right to Know¡±.
Insiders Looking In illustrates how being in the position of an outsider can
offer both objectivity and subjectivity.

Jean Klimack and Doug Lewis¡¯ installations are photo and multi-media based.
Doug Lewis¡¯ work will consist of 2 separate bodies of work that are very much
linked together: Eddy¡¯s Closet and The Great Walls Project.

Jean Klimack¡¯s work includes a selected video and a series of digitally scanned
prints from the series entitled ¡°Fa Piao Stains¡± and ¡°a kid can do it¡±.

Artists£º
Jean Klimack¡¯s work is informed by aspects of the everyday. Things that are present - sights,
sounds, smells, textures. Klimack is interested in remnants or traces ¡°left behind¡±,
also in contexts, ones which personalize moments distinguishing them one from another.
Jean Klimack is a practicing artist from Canada and currently resides and teaches art in Beijing.
She received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and her BFA from the University of Manitoba.
Her work has shown internationally in group exhibitions in Canada, United States and England.

Doug Lewis is a Canadian-born artist with a research and project-based practice.
His work is founded on the idea that art is when you decide it to be; Lewis¡¯ work focuses on
an idea that his art making is a way of navigating life.
As an artist and curator, Lewis has shown and curated internationally in Canada, USA, England and
Croatia. He received his MAFA from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London and currently teaches
art in Beijing, China. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria,
Canada and Whistable Biennale, England. Imagine Gallery is his first exhibition in China.
